In March 2019, Tang Kwok-hin established 1983, an independent artist-run space in his ancestral home in Kam Tin, New Territories.

Originally launched as “1983 Bar,” the project was later simplified to simply “1983” (named after the artist’s birth year). The space grew out of Tang’s 2018 project Every Pandiculate, which explored social engagement and the blurring of art and daily life. Rather than creating a conventional white-cube gallery, Tang transformed part of his family’s historic walled village house into a hybrid domestic-studio-community venue.

Located in an 800-year-old village setting, 1983 functions as an experimental platform that emphasizes dialogue, resource sharing, and community interaction. It hosts a wide range of interdisciplinary activities including exhibitions, film screenings, artist talks, performances, dinners, and informal gatherings. The space aims to support emerging artists and cultural practitioners while fostering connections between local and international creators.

By opening his own home to the public, Tang Kwok-hin has created a model of local artist-run initiative — one that bridges personal history, village life, and contemporary artistic practice in an increasingly challenging cultural environment in Hong Kong.
